India’s Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao today ended her 2 day fact finding mission to Sri Lanka which primarily focused on the Northern region.
Rao during her 2 day mission visited Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mullaitivu and Omanthai in the Northern Province.
Rao inspected the Resettlement process of IDP’s, had discussions with IDP’s and also distributed agricultural toolkits, roofing sheets and cement bags to some of the recently resettled IDPs.
She also inspected the de-mining operation conducted by the Indian Ex-servicemen in Omanthai.
Indian High Commission in Colombo says the Indian Foreign Secretary also had talks with the Northern Civil society during her visit to the region.
Citing the talks Rao had with the Northern Civil Society, the Indian high Commission said the Civil Society underscored the need for India to be involved in the political process to ensure a permanent settlement.
Rao’s also met President Mahinda Rajapaksa following the completion of her visit to the Northern Province.
India already has pledged billions of rupees to fund the North Eastern Reconstruction program and also plans to build 50,000 houses in both those regions to help settle IDP’s.
The Country is also working towards establishing a diplomatic office in Jaffna.
