Sri Lanka started the World T20 campaign on a winning note by beating Zimbabwe last night, thanks to a record breaking performance by Ajantha Mendis.
Mendis grabbed 6 Zimbabwean wickets by conceding just 8 runs in his spell, thus marking the best T20 international bowling figures, breaking his own previous record.
The visitors who were targeting a score of 183 to win were all out for just 100 runs scored in 17.3 overs.
Before Mendis started his magic spell, Sri Lanka’ strong batting line helped by Kumar Sangakkara and Jeewan Mendis put the Lankan innings on top.
Sangakkara scored 44 runs from 26 balls
Jeewan Mendis added 43 runs from 30 balls apart from grabbing 3 wickets in his spell.
Earlier in the innings T.M. Dilshan made 39 runs from 28 balls.
Debut maker Dilshan Munaweera scored 17 runs from 19 balls.
Man of the Match award went to Ajantha Mendis.
Sri Lanka ‘s next game will be against South Africa which will also played at the Hambantota cricket grounds on Saturday.
