President Mahinda Rajapaksa has got the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to release former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, who is now serving a jail term, a media report said.

DNA Parliamentarian Tiran Alles also has told the media that President has promised to release Fonseka.

Fonseka, played an instrumental role in wiping out the LTTE, a US proscribed terror outfit.

The group was defeated in 2009, after it waged a 30 year war demanding a separate state.
