Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has resigned on Tuesday following public protest over his controversial order to arrest a senior judge, says a media report.
Reports say Nasheed will hand over the presidency to his Vice President Mohammed Waheed Hassan.
Public protest against Nasheed has started after he ordered the military to arrest Abdulla Mohamed, the chief judge of the Criminal Court.
The resignation marks the end of Nasheed, a former human rights campaigner who defeated Maldives long time ruler Abdul Gayoom.
Minivan news of Maldives reported that even elements of police have joined opposition demonstrators who wants Nasheed to leave office.
“A group of police sided with the opposition in ongoing anti-government riots last night, before joining a mob of demonstrators attacking the Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) headquarters this morning” reported Minivan news.
