Sri Lanka’s Eastern Provincial Council today saw the appointment of Najeeb A. Majid as its Chief Minister, the first time a Muslim became the Chief Minister of the province.
Majid, a member of the ruling UPFA also functions as the SLFP organizer for Trincomalee district.
According to state run News.lk, the appointment comes as the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has promised its support for the ruling UPFA to help run the Eastern Provincial Council by forming a coalition.
Eastern Provincial Council was engulfed in a three cornered battle during the recently concluded PC elections with UPFA, TNA and SLMC battling out to win the province, but there was no clear winner.
UPFA narrowly managed to win the Province, but the win was not enough to form a government without the support of another party.
