News website charges revised

Sri Lankan government has decided to bring down the earlier announced charges for registration of news casting websites and annual renewal fee per those websites to Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively.

The cabinet of Ministers has given their approval to the proposal brought forward by Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella.

These charges will be effective from 1st of January 2012.

Few weeks ago, the government decided to charge Rs. 100,000 for new registrations and Rs. 25,000 for annual renewal, which resulted in news website operators in the country showing concern.
