Sri Lanka has received 57,506 tourists during the month of May, a 17.5% growth compared to 48,943 tourists received by the country during May, 2011.
Region-wise, the highest number of visitors have come from Western Europe accounting for 15,596 tourists compared to 12,419 arrived during May 2011, a growth of 25.6%.
UK, France and Germany have respectively accounted for the highest number of visitors from the Western European region.
Visitors from the East Asian region have recorded the biggest growth with a 41% jump during this May, compared to the same month of last year.
Accordingly, visitors from East Asia, mainly coming from China, Japan and Malaysia have accounted for 9,311 tourists in May compared to just 6,605 visitors arrived during the corresponding month of the last year.
India has sent the largest number of visitors from a single country totaling a visitor figure of 15,888 during May, 2012.
However the arrivals from India has dropped by 4.6% year on year.
Meanwhile, during the first 5 months of this year Sri Lanka has seen its tourism arrivals growing by 18.2% over the same period of last year.
Accordingly, during the first five months, the tourism industry has got 387,622 visitors compared to just 327,902 visitors the island got during the same period of last year.
